An Extract From An Article by Andrew Brace Entitled “Surplus CCs... time for the ‘roving speciality’? (reprinted by kind permission of Dog World)

My own feelings at the time when these surplus CCs became public knowledge were that they should have been at least offered to the parent breed club, so that they would have had the opportunity to run a second championship show. If they declined, other breed clubs could have been similarly consulted. To me it was the most logical thing to do with any “spare tickets”. Thus I was interested to hear that the Kennel Club has been in contact with certain breed clubs, suggesting that they may wish to combine forces to run a jointly-organised show at which the breed’s ‘surplus’ CCs may be offered. Personally I can see logistical problems of varying degrees when more than one club is asked to organise anything – sometimes one solitary committee has problems in agreeing among itself, so imagine the potential for differences of opinion when two or more clubs get together.

Perhaps the time has come to offer any surplus CCs to breed clubs in rotation, so that they can have the chance to organise a ‘roving speciality’ rather like many clubs do with great success in the US. Some breeds foster other disciplines, not merely conformation competition, and the potential is there to establish a two-day event where appropriate, and make a special weekend of it.

National specialities in the US are invariably lavish affairs with sweepstakes of various kinds, and showcase the breed concerned in its many roles. I am sure that, given the opportunity, many breed clubs in this country would welcome the chance to stage a special show and the KC should be applauded for allowing these clubs some kind of input as to where the extra CCs are made available.
