Championship Show judges announced in the June issue of the Kennel Gazette are as follows – 2008: Crufts – Mr John Bainbridge; National Terrier – Mrs Jayne Gillam; WELKS – Mr David Maggs; Birmingham National – Mrs Marion Reeves; East of England – Mrs Lesley Crawley and Blackpool – Mr Philip Greenway (although a well-known Terrier Group Judge this will be the first time Mr Greenway has awarded CCs in Border Terriers). 2009: Crufts – Mr Steve Dean.

Also announced in this issue of the Kennel Gazette are two Border Terriers who have been awarded Junior Warrant Certificates – Mr & Mrs Macdonald’s Penlumeg Percival by Badgerbeck, bred by Mrs Harris (Badgerbeck Bonsai ex Penlumeg Paloma) and Ms Vasey’s homebred Ruelata Allspice (Ch Ragatam Crackerjack ex August’s Last Surprise), this is from the first litter of Border Terriers bred by Ms Vasey – quite an achievement.

Also in this issue of the Kennel Gazette, there is a list of people who have joined the Accredited Breeder Scheme between 1 July 2006 and 28 February 2007 and this is the first time that the Accolades have appeared on the list and there are quite a number of Border Terrier accredited breeders who do not appear to have any accolades at all. On the subject of the accolades, it does seem to misrepresent members’ experience in that those accredited breeders who have more than one breed can presumably have gained all three accolades in one breed and none in their other breeds, although the accolades appear on the list to relate to all the breeds listed and this can be very confusing to members of the public. From my own experience when talking to prospective puppy buyers, they already find it very confusing because they assume that the accolade for breeder experience means experience of that particular breed and it actually means that they have had 5 litters registered with the Kennel Club which could be from a different breed entirely. Perhaps it would be better if the accolades could be shown against the breed in which they were gained.

Also seen in the Kennel Gazette in a section called “The Rules Clarified” was a question and answer piece regarding a puppy entered in a Yearling class with regard to its eligibility to compete for Best Puppy. I think this must have been a piece reprinted from a much earlier issue as the age qualification for entry in Yearling classes is now 12 to 24 months so a puppy could not be entered in such a class (I think this age limit has been in force for about two years now – it was, of course, previously 6 months to 24 months): so don’t believe everything you read in the Gazette!

It was extremely warm at Southern Counties on Saturday and it really is a lovely showground being spacious and well laid out (the main drawback being the long walk to the toilet facilities). Unfortunately, it is rather spoilt for Border Terrier exhibitors as we have to park at the opposite end of the showground from our ring and benching tent (despite all the complaints to the show management last year) and the instructions which came with the passes informed us that we were benched in a completely different tent (3) when we were actually in tent (2). Apparently we are not the only breed affected in this way as a friend in a gundog breed has told me that they too had to park at the opposite end of the showground to their ring and benching.

Unfortunately, Gordon Knight had to withdraw from his judging appointment due to ill health and we all wish Gordon a speedy recovery; our replacement judge was Michelle Barnett, her second time awarding CCs in the breed.

There were 117 dogs making an entry of 146 and the DCC and BOB went to Sally Leslie and John Bainbridge’s homebred Risdene Tapenade (his 1st CC) and he is by Ch/NorCh Lyddington Last Supper At Risdene ex Risdene Quip. BCC was won by Lisa and Paul Macdonald’s Baywillow Blue Bouquet For Badgerbeck, just out of puppy this is her 1st CC; she was bred by Marion Reeves by Ch Tythrop Tapas ex Baywillow Beguiling JW. RDCC was won by Lisa and Paul Macdonald’s Penlumeg Percival By Badgerbeck JW, bred by Mrs Harris (Badgerbeck Bonsai ex Penlumeg Paloma) and he already has 1 CC. RBCC went to Lesley Crawley’s Dandyhow Madam Butterfly, bred by Kate Irving (Ch/Am Ch/Can Ch Conundrum Co-Writer ex Ch Dandyhow Iolanthe) and this is her 3rd RCC.

BP was Lisa and Paul Macdonald’s homebred Badgerbeck Purdi (Baywillow Racing Blue JW ex Pure Delight Among Glebeheath); this is her 2nd BP award and finished off a wonderful day for Lisa and Paul.
