MIDLAND COUNTIES CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW

Midland Counties Canine Society
BORDER TERRIER

29th October 2006

Judge: Graham Pickering (Picer)

It was a great honor to be asked to judge this show and I felt privileged to have 210 entries from 198 dogs.  I enjoyed the day and would like to thank the Midland Counties Committee and particularly my two stewards for their help in ensuring that everything went smoothly. With regard to the dogs, there were some really super exhibits and I had some hard decisions to make. Many dogs that were of good quality and fitted the standard went cardless on the day.  I was looking for a correct sized Border, with a good otter head, dense double coat, with thick pelt and good muscle tone, in short a dog that looked like it could do the job that it is bred for – essentially a working terrier.  I was very pleased with the class winners and the final line up for the challenges as they all represented what I was looking for in a top quality Border Terrier.

BOB & DCC went to CH Ashbrae Poacher, BCC Orenberg Faerie Hawk JW and BP Raeburnfoot Claret.

A nice class of very promising puppies, all in good coat.

Peacock ‘s Ragatam Guilder

A well put together 8mth old grizzle pup with a lot to like.  Head of correct proportions, lacking a little in face furnishings today, which didn’t detract as he has a typical border expression.  In good double coat, with thick pelt. Well angulated hindquarters that ensured that he moved out well and showed to the entire ring.

2nd

Moffatt ‘sTowden Storm Diver At Laurelton

A nice type 6mth dog with a good outline, straight narrow front, well-shaped ribs and developing loin. Excellent rear angulation, lost out to 1 on movement and maturity.

Irving’s Dandyhow Night Watchman

Wallace’s Hobholt Harrier

A well constructed young dog which headed a quality class. He stood with confidence in the ring and showed himself off well.  Lovely head which is typical of the otter head described by the standard, with a very keen expression and eye. Good length of neck and excellent shoulder placement. Well toned body and good rib. I would have liked a little more rear angulation, but this did not inhibit him moving round the ring as he covered the ground well for one so young. I look forward to seeing him mature and develop.

Harrison’s Iacheslei Torus

Hard to split 1st and 2nd places – another quality dog with a good otter head, dark eye and in smart condition and balanced proportions. Again good neck and shoulder placement, strong hindquarters, good underline – lovely in profile. Lost out to 1 in coat and not so positive on the move today.

3rd

Macdonald’s Penlumeg Percival By Badgerbeck

 JUNIOR – Dog

A super class of junior dogs – I really enjoyed judging this class.

Stockley’s Foxfactor Hornblower

A typical border dog throughout, very good head proportion with a keen expression and dark eye, well placed ears. Clean neck and shoulder lines, ribs carried well back, running into strong hindquarters. Smart tight feet with thick pads. Good double coat and pelt, this dog was just right for bone. He moved out and showed well. A pleasure to judge.

2nd

Horner’s Orenberg Advocate Of Stineval

Another very good junior dog – he pushed hard for 1st place. Slightly more racy than the class winner and in hard condition, super coat and pelt. Typical otter head, good ear placement, lovely dark eye. Like 1 – good scissor bite and strong under jaw. Has the straightest of fronts and tight feet. I would have like a little more bend of stifle but still moved out well.

Johnson & Pearson’s Rexlands Red Start

A super looking dog in hard condition with a good tweedy & weather resistant coat. A very pleasing masculine head with a good bite and correct under jaw. Superb front, leading into smooth shoulders and well carried back ribs. Feet as per the standard with thick pads which no doubt would ensure he could do a days work. Moved out well both for and aft (some in this class were less positive on the move).

2nd

Boulton’s Dugaden Foudland Blaeberry Boy Shcm

Another credible B/Tdog who is well put together and has good confirmation. He has typical masculine head, correct ear placement and correct bite with big white teeth. Straight front, good bone and tight feet. Lovely in profile, ribs carried well back and strong in loin. I would have liked to see a little more rear angulation, but moved out with drive. Today lost to 1 on coat.

There were some good honest Borders in this class that went without cards on the day – a superb class for quality and one of those that made the day both enjoyable and difficult.

Parker’s Conundrum Sweet Sir Galahad

Headed this excellent class, and was hard to miss for his quality. A super all round B/T dog with a typical otter head, keen varmint expression with dark eye. He has the neatest of body lines and is a joy to see in profile. Ribs are carried well back, strong loin with a tail that flows straight off the back. He has strong, well muscled hindquarters and stood on small tight feet with thick pads. Good double coat, lovely ticking. Pushed very hard in the challenge.

Gilpin’s Otterbobs Ninezergh

Again a dog of good quality – liked him a lot. Correct size, nicely proportioned and balanced. He has a good masculine head with a strong muzzle and dark eye.  Straight front, smooth shoulders which ensured good front movement. Correct bone, good rib, and excellent tail set which finished the balance. Showed well, but short of coat today.

Cuthbertson’s Ch Ashbrae Poacher  DCC & BOB

Think workman like – a super dog in unexaggerated hard condition and certainly looked like he could do the job. Good otter head, well filled under the eye, a strong muzzle, big white teeth, big nostrils all of  which contributed to ‘a couldn’t care less varminty expression’. Good reach of neck leading into smooth shoulders. Stood on small tight feet with good thick pads. Ribs carried well back with a strong loin, and well placed tail giving him balance. This dog is topped off by a superb double coat and thick working pelt. His well angulated hindquarters ensured an excellent movement which enabled him to cover the ground effortlessly.

Archibald’s Tweedburn Valentino   RDCC

A dog that I have admired a great deal from the ring side and I have to say that he didn’t disappoint one bit. The best of otter heads with a dark eye, strong under jaw and big white teeth set square in the jaw. An excellent straight front, small feet. Correct double coat with harsh pelt. This dog is of good bone, is nicely balanced and has lovely bodylines with a good tail set. He has correct rear angulation and he moved as if he owned the ring. A lovely dog pleased to award him RCC.

Guvercin’s Glebeheath Figurine

A very nice puppy with lots of potential for the future. She looks a feminine border puppy and is not overdone in any way. Typical border head with almond shaped eye. Good scissor bite and teeth. Her front is straight and she has tight feet with thick pads. Correct bone, smoothest of shoulders running into well laid back ribs. Coat was of correct texture with a loose pelt. Well bent stifle helped her move around the ring with ease – showed herself off with confidence.

Docwra’s Bandicoot Miss April

A well put together puppy with a correctly proportioned otter head, keen eye and a good set of teeth. Small ears correctly placed and a keen border expression. Hogg’s Raeburnfoot Claret  BP

This bitch took my eye from entering the ring and she didn’t disappoint when I went over her. A lovely feminine puppy with a superb outline handled well and behaved with exceptional confidence for one so young. Her head is feminine and unexaggerated, lovely dark eye, little stop, plenty under the eye yet still keeping her feminine looks. A good scissor bite and strong under jaw. She is straight in front, has small feet as per the standard, smooth shoulders with ribs carried well back. Tail straight off the back which showed off a good level top line. A well angulated rear ensured balance.  She moved out with drive covering the ground well and with confidence. I was pleased to award her BP.

A typical Border with an outstanding outline which didn’t disappoint when I went over her on the table. She has the best of feminine otter heads with a lovely shaped eye and ears placed correctly close to her cheeks. A good bite with big white teeth and a strong muzzle. The straightest of fronts with good bone running into smooth shoulders and well carried back ribs. Nice carroty tail which comes straight off the back. Good rear angulation which added to the super confirmation of this bitch. Lovely movement fore and aft and she covered the ground around the ring with both ease and confidence. All of this topped off with the best of B/T coats. Scored over 2 on movement.

Similar comments apply to this lovely bitch – a little more of her all round. The best of otter heads with very little stop and well filled under the eye. Good for hindquarters, plenty of bone and muscle tone, good bend of stifle. Straight front with shoulders without any hint of coarseness.  Covered the ground well. Not as racy as 1 in bodyline. Good coat and thick pelt.

Gillam’s Orenberg Faerie Hawk JW  BCC

A lovely, typey grizzle bitch with really racy bodylines yet not overdone or exaggerated in anyway. Typical feminine otter head with lovely almond shaped eye, little stop, well filled under the eye giving her the best of expressions. Her front is narrow and straight and she has the smoothest of shoulders. Ribs carried well back to a strong loin with a good top line and tail set to finish the picture. A good double coat and pelt – lovely harsh tweedy texture. Well angulated hindquarters which ensured that she moved effortlessly around the ring.  Standing she looked balanced and stood out for quality and type a pleasure to judge – very pleased to award her BCC.

James’s Blackmine Paper Heart

A slightly different type of bitch – yet still of excellent quality and make up. A good feminine border head without any exaggeration, dark in eye and well placed ears rounded off the picture. Straight front, good reach of neck into lovely shoulder placement. Good top line and tail set. Well angulated hindquarters ensured good movement. Handled beautifully – unfortunately came up against the 1st place winner and lost out on coat.

Girling’s Gameway Solstice At Benattivo

Super no nonsense bitch of the correct make up and proportion. Attractive feminine head with keen eye, neat ears and good muzzle. Straight front, clean shoulders running into well placed ribs and strong loin. Tail coming straight off the back ensured she looked good in profile. Lovely bone, firm in her pastons and tight feet as per the standard. Well covered with a double coat and loose pelt. Good sound movement, she showed her self off.  She was an obvious contender for top honours, but seemed to lose her sparkle in the challenge.

Fryer’s Irton Fiddles On Fire

Another lovely bitch in hard workman like condition. Again an unexaggerated bitch that looked like she could follow the horse. She has a keen varminty look about her which added to the picture. Dark eye with the correct amount of stop and plenty of strength under the eye which added to a super otter head. Good front, correct bone, smooth shoulders, strong loin and a lovely tail and tail set which added to the balanced picture. Excellent dense coat which I am sure would bode well for her in all weathers. Well angulated hindquarters ensured that she moved and showed well.
